It is apparent now that the red hot anti-police rhetoric saturating our society via the mass media for the last few weeks has filtered down to the mentally ill who interpret it all as open season on police officers. Our condolences go out to the families and co-workers of Officers Liu and Ramos of The NYPD. Another police officer was killed early this morning in Florida by a man described by authorities as a “transient”. We are still awaiting more information on that incident. While all law enforcement officers must normally be “on guard” at all times, that situational awareness must now be brought to the highest level. Unfortunately, as we all know too well, disturbed individuals are in all communities throughout this country. Irresponsible statements condemning all law enforcement by many whom we expected better from have contributed to the unjustified hatred for dedicated police officers and deputies all over this country. It’s time for it all to stop. We have a system of justice which although not perfect, it is the best in the world and has been in our constitution for over 2 centuries. The system is based upon the participation of citizens and may lead to individual results in particular cases that some don’t like. Spreading mass hate for law enforcement is not the answer. There is plenty of blame to go around. The reasons for crime and poverty are complex and many, but are NOT the fault of law enforcement. Some of the politicians fueling the anti-police rhetoric need to put their money where their mouth is and come up with real solutions for crime, poverty and the lack of education of so many of our citizens. Just as police officers everywhere must be on high alert, citizens everywhere need to understand that they are now in such a high state of readiness wondering if they might be the next officer who doesnt get to go home to his family due to a crazed individual who believes he is the next avenger of “justice”. Officers will and should be giving extra attention to that person who walks up behind them while seated in their patrol car or on foot. All of us in this area got a small taste of what anarchy looks like after Hurricane Katrina. It was ugly. What have we come to when so many in our society believe anarchy is actually a positive thing. That, unfortunately, is where we are. We have to all just stop, take a deep breath and move ahead trying to put the anger aside. The alternative is not acceptable. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Please also pray for our country.
