It is back in 1992 and i am a young innocent lad in Form Four at St. Marys Yala. We are just from having our KCSE mock examination results and Mr. Ndegwa, the biology teacher has also just released the results of post-mock biology examination. He is now in form four east releasing the statistics on performance. He laments that our stream (form four east has performed miserably compared to the other streams; we are nowhere in top 10. Suddenly, Robert Jaramba, seated beside me blurts outfavoritism. The whole class is silent, Ndegwa is livid with rage. Realising the gravity of his misdemeanor, Robert immediately says Ochieng, how can you tell the teacher such a thing?. I protest vehemently that it wasnt me, it was Robert. . Boniface Rapudo, who was seated directly behind us, is asked to say who the culprit is. Hen says he can not tell between me and Robert, who blurted out the words (although i was sure he knew it was Robert but was protecting his close friend). We are all hauled to the staffroom where we lie down under some trees behind the staffroom and all the teachers come to cane us at will, the whole day...till supper time. The following week, Mr Zephenia Wabomba, who is on duty, calls me as i walk to to class in the evening after supper (all the others are running faster than David Rudisha, because Mr. John Were, the Snr Principal, never tired of reminding us that this is not a holiday camp!). So Mr. Wambomba asks me:Ochieng, what would you say if we wrote in your leaving certificate that the boy was outspoken, controversial and difficult?. I tell him calmly: But sir that would not be true. Then he retorts: Really? look at the case you had with Robert last week, was that not controversial, how could you say such things to your teacher?. I answer him back: Sir, i did not say those words!. He then looks at me directly in the eyes and concludes: Haya..you go!, we shall also add that he can sometimes say things and later deny them!. I then walk to the classroom totally confused, dejected and speechless!
