It is becoming clear that facts don’t matter to many of the people protesting grand jury No True Bill decisions in Ferguson and New York City. Any opportunity to illustrate “the larger truth” that African-Americans are victims will be taken, especially if dramatic video exists, or if a dramatic fantasy tale can be constructed. But it is unusual for someone as prominent and respected as Eleanor Holmes Norton to admit an indifference to fact. Eleanor Homes Norton sits in Congress as the D.C. delegate, without a vote but otherwise enjoying the same pay, perks, and staff as a real Member of Congress. She is also considered one of the leading lights of the African-American political class. In an appearance with Sean Hannity, when questioned about the “hands up, don’t shoot narrative” being a lie, based on the physical evidence presented to the grand jury, the delegate became angry, raised her voice, and stated, “My interest is not in what did happen.” She is more concerned about what should happen from now on, you see.
