It is certainly worth considering how you might handle a situation like this. A crazy, knife-wielding man is assaulting people and you have no firearm on you for one reason or another. (say, like this, youre in a third world country and cant have one) How do you practice Active Self Protection in that instance? I would say this guy did pretty well. Lessons: 1. Not getting cut to ribbons by a knife is a function of staying away from it. If you get close the guy will ventilate you quickly. So dont get close! This guy was able to keep the distance and won the fight. Good plan. 2. The key to using tools lies in knowing their strengths and weaknesses... goo.gl/xR9Qh7 3. One huge advantage that the pole-wielding man had was having a friend in the fight. That extra person, even though he didnt really affect the outcome directly, gave the knife-wielder something else to think about and provided an advantage. Having friends who will help you is...well..helpful! 4. Your goal in a fight is to end the threat. I love that the pole-wielding guy didnt stomp the knife-wielders guts out. He might have grabbed the knife (cant tell for sure), but once the threat was truly neutralized he congratulated his buddy and went on his way. Thats great ASP. He stopped the threat and then it was over. (hopefully someone called authorities and they scooped the knife-wielder up) I think its safe to say that pole-wielder is the good guy because of his follow-up actions. He doesnt look like someone who is a thug by his end game. 5. Better tools end fights faster. A firearm ends this fight in a split second. Because pole-wielder had to use an improvised tool it was a lot dicier for him. He did great, so huzzah! But having a better tool (like an expandable baton or even better a pistol) would have made the fight a lot more sure for him. Have the most effective tools possible on you at all times. Attitude. Skills. Plan.
