It is cold for early September. It has been a cold summer in Beckley. As if the seasons are interweaving. Well, it seems that way in Beckley. Eventhough most conversations are about the unseasonal times, theyre are those who still refer to the Almanac. The Old Farmers Almanac or the Farmers Almanac are just a few of the modern versions. Published within their pages are weather forecasts, planting dates and so much more. What fascinates me more is the astronomical dates. The publications connects the tides to the growth of the moon and earths distance from the sun. But more importantly, the book gives the daily time for sunrise and sunset. This brings me to a little story about Blondie Kinnion. He was a mild mannered outdoorsman. His voice was country. His demeanor pleasant and welcoming. He was a very calm man. Never-the-less, I have a story about him and a Almanac. Early one morning, his love of fishing took him to Goose Creek. With a constant vigil of looking at his watch and a firm belief the Almanac could not be wrong, he patiently waiting for the Almanac time of sunrise to begin fishing. So the time came upon him and cast his net did he. Suddenly a Game Warden approached. According to the state of North Carolina, Blondie had bean fishing to early. Of course, Blondie disputed the officers assertion and referred to his trusty Almanac. The officer could not be swayed and wrote a ticket. Blondie appeared in court and challenged his citation. With his invaluable booklet, he defended his innocence and won. Whoever thought that a manuscript filled with forecasts, predictions and countless charts would become an instrument for justice. Today, the cold air reminds me Autumn is in haste. So too does the Almanac.
