It is come to our attention that there has been some misunderstanding about how we make our decisions on what is being transferred and available for adoption, as well as the few times we have assisted other facilities in bringing animals here to be adopted. Although we don’t have to justify our reasoning to outside groups, we are more than willing to explain our decisions in the hopes that we can help more animals in our community. We have brought 157 dogs in from other facilities in 2014 and their average length of stay is 11.1 days, This includes a couple pit bulls from CACC, which would have been euthanized, but were given their second chance at JTAC and have found the perfect family to call their own. Our plan with any animal that we pull is to be able to immediately make them available for adoption. Most of the animals we pull have already had heartworm testing, most vaccines and even some are already fixed, which limit the cost we have to invest in these animals. We have said many times about animals that are at a facility for long periods of time, they just need a change of scenery or a change in the audience that views them. With over 7,000 Facebook fans and an average of 70 adoptions a month, it is sometimes in the animal’s best interest to come to JTAC and quickly find their forever home. We are still an animal control and can’t control what comes in our doors, the pace at which they do, the temperament issues or even medical problems. However, we always do what is in the animal’s best interest, and decide if they should be put up for adoption or find potential rescue. With limited funding and limited staffing when it comes to the amount of time required to change behavior issues, we find it best to move these types of animals into a rescue which many times is in a foster home with dedicated and knowledgeable people who can help these dogs achieve their goal of finding a family. As we all know there are many dogs that when you find the “right” family it will be perfect, but unfortunately it may take a long time for that perfect person to walk in the door of an animal control, but many of those people are familiar with the concept of rescue and therefore contact them first to adopt. Our goals are the same – Help dogs find their forever home and not end up back into the shelter system. Please respect our decisions for what we feel is best for the animals that are currently in our facility. We encourage everyone to stop by and visit. Many times things that are posted on Facebook or even this explanation may not clarify your questions. We would be happy to visit with you and answer any concern you may have. We are trying very hard to help change the negative image that an animal control has in the community. Starting with educating children and disproving the continuous negative implications that movies and cartoons portray. However, we can only achieve this with help from other animal lovers – so please do your part and help others understand what ALL of our goals really are. Thanks
