Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase had already determined that DNA is the genetic material, and Rosalind Franklin had used X-ray crystallography to reveal its width, shape, and repeating patterns. Watson and Crick simply paid attention to all the information about DNA in scientific circles, and brought it together into a comprehensive whole.
