It is difficult for me not to notice when a character is named - TopicsExpress

It is difficult for me not to notice when a character is named Charles or Charlie in a story, painting, movie, either in a fictional or nonfictional setting, either historically or contemporaneously… Though, none of those characterizations fit my personality or my biography. I particularly notice when someone uses the phraseology: “Mr. Charlie”. It doesn’t go unnoticed. And, this is a poignant time for me to highlight that. Until recently, I didn’t realize that such phraseology has spread across several continents. Now, as we grow accustomed to being able to see and read about people around the world, and as we grow accustomed to what appears to be problematic throughout the world (the problem of stereotyping someone based on what nation their ancestors were from, or based on the mere mention of what religion they do or do not practice) I hope that you can understand why I might decide to distance myself at least a little bit if someone insists on calling me Mr. Charlie; though, I will take it into consideration (now that I have highlighted it) the sometimes completely accidental (and often ridiculous) tendencies of our minds to rebel against that which we tell our minds not to do. I know I say things that are foolish with such frequency and accidentally so often that I’m often embarrassed to write or say anything for fear of the foolish words that tumble out. And, I know that it is confusing to distinguish between when such is accidental and when it is intentional. For, clearly, I intentionally highlight diversity. And, I have a great respect for people who appreciate diversity.
