It is easy to be loyal to your party when it is the winning party. But the people that truly need to be commended in our democracy are those who have faithfully remained in the opposition all these years. At the federal level is the AD with all its other new names. The APP with all its other new names too to some extent. APGA to a little extent too. Its not easy to go to the polls every 4 years, lose the Presidency and still have the courage to remain in the opposition in Nigeria where politicians and their supporters change parties like toothbrushes. At the state level, the PDP in the South-west and a couple of Northern states needs to be commended too. Top on the list is the PDP in Lagos State. Imagine being in a party for 16 years without your party winning the gubernatorial election or a senatorial seat and still having the courage to remain in the opposition. It is even worse in the South-west where those who are not part of the mainstream party are directly or indirectly called traitors and thieves. And yet some people refuse to be intimidated or enticed. In a country where politics is a route to wealth, it takes great courage to be in the opposition in a political system where the winner usually takes it all and does everything to ensure that the opponent does not win even a local council election or share in the super-attractive dividends of democracy.
