It is easy to find a JOB when you have a JOB; True! - TopicsExpress

It is easy to find a JOB when you have a JOB; True! Yesterday, I received a call from my friend named M soliciting my advice in his plans to transfer to other pharma company. I remember I, too was unemployed for quite some time because i quit voluntarily from my previous employer due to some reasons and concerns. Ridiculous as it sound but why it is very hard to look for a job when you are unemployed than when when you are employed? When I try to apply for the same job and on the same field once again, I find a hard time getting employed. Work discrimination, we may say so - so the HR should have posted in their door a sign where UNEMPLOYED SHOULD NOT APPLY. It was a waste fo time for me and for the hundred of applicants toiling to get to the 2nd, 3rd or final interview, but when you have a job looking for transfer. It is easy to knock on HR door. Is it because HR filter the application program first - from the current employed and the list of unemployed? An easier way for HR to rule out most applicants where most are unemployed and the less few which are employed. Or is it because employers are just bidding their time to pick the best candidate until someone who is employed better will come along during the waiting period? Or is it because it was a standard HR assumptions that; 1. People with the highest salary histories are the most talented. 2. The person with the most relevant experience is the person who will perform best in the job. 3. And the stupidest reason is that - people who have lost their job are less talented than those who didnt. If experience is the guarantee for competence, but unemployed also have the skills and qualifications that must be considered also for the job. Best education is no guarantee either of being a top pharma salesman. During the 80s I remember all the classified ads are looking for Medrep qualification that are; - should belong to top 5% of his class, graduate of Ateneo or La Salle. But it turns out the Atenista and the La Salista are the the first one to quit from the job increasing employee turnover because they cannot do the dirty job of waiting for the doctor along with a hundred sick patients in the Hospital corridor. There are many questions than answers why it is easy to find a job when you are still employed than unemployed. Obviously you are more valuable when you are still connected. So the best advice is, you may have a number of reason of resigning from your present employer but be extra careful in your decision. The best advice to you - can be; 1. Dont resign yet only until you have already got a new employer. When you are out of job also try to read some articles where you can enhance your selling or management skills. Be passionate from what you are trained for. Chances that over a long period of unemployment, your knowledge will become rusty. The long gap of unemployment may negatively affect your chances of getting employed even with your impressive credentials. 2. As my former NSM Dodie R. used to tell me- DONT BURN YOUR BRIDGES. Meaning stay connected with your friends in the industry, chances that your former co-workers and peers from the industry will take you in knowing your qualification and friendship develop through the years or will recommend you to other companies. Your OLD BOYS CLUB can easily save you from unemployment. The pharma industry is like a government bureaucracy - sometimes the adage goes the same that- it is whom you know and it is not what you knew. Goodluck Super Medrep!
