It is essential to distinguish between those situations where there is still work to be done within a relationship and those where the work together has come to an end. All too often, we remain locked into connections that no longer serve us, sometimes even long after the person has departed. And, all too often, we let go of connections before our work together is completed, sometimes even long before anyone has departed. In each situation, we have to decide-- is this relationship a laboratory for my own expansion, or a prison of my own making? Does it invite growth, or induce sleep? Can we find a way to become more conscious together, or are we better off apart? This is the art form of relatedness-- knowing when to dive in deeper, knowing when to step away. Once we perfect this art, we can grow forward in our relational life.
