It is fascinating to imagine the reaction that would have greeted a decision by Bruce Springsteen to instead perform the Ballad of the Green Berets at the Concert for Valor. It would have been a straight-out-of-left-field song selection, but I wish he had done it. And for a couple of reason. First, it is not a bad song at all. It was a legitimate crossover hit in 1966, ranking high on four different billboard listening charts. And I think the Boss could have pulled it off. Most importantly though, the right couldnt have used it as a political football the way they are doing with CCRs antiwar anthem Fortunate Son. So, the choice to perform it would have surely sparked a debate but it would have been framed differently from the get-go. Meaning that maybe the possibility would have existed for an intelligent discussion of the Vietnam War Era.
