It is fascinating what one can learn wasting an afternoon on the internet, procrastinating from the vital tasks of cleaning the apartment, walking the dog, editing artcritical, preparing a few remarks about David Row for tonights concert chez Alain Kirili etc. I was looking for a jpeg of a sculpture I was drawing last night at the Met by Edward McCartan when I started reading up on the Beaux Arts Institute of Design where he taught which in turn led me to wonder what happened to that institution (the history of obscure art schools of New York being a personal obsession of mine for reasons we wont go into) which graduated Jules Olitski and a few 1950s sculptors amongst others. Then I discover a later name change to the Van Alen Inst. named for the architect of the Chrysler Bldg and then, in the picture gallery of the latter I find out that the same architect designed a building I have admired and wondered about for years at Dupont Circle every time I visit the Phillips Collection. But this doesnt help clean the apt or walk the dog.
