It is important for us to realise that the mountain of darkness in Hebrews 12 is not referring to Mount Sinai per se but the old Jerusalem that (at that time) was soon to be set of fire by the Romans. Look at this verse. Galatians 4:25 25 Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. See what it says it correspond with present Jerusalem (at that time). The old Jerusalem is of Hagar. It is when the Law was practiced. It was where the sacrifices were offered. It was where the Law was fully manifested. The old Jerusalem was the personification of Mount Sinai. Hebrews 12:18-20 18 You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; 19 to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, 20 because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.” Since the old Jerusalem was destroyed in AD70. We must note that the New Jerusalem has already come to fruition. It may not have manifested physically but it has manifested spiritually. Galatians 4:25-26 25 Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. You are the New Jerusalem. The new city of God is the body of believers.
