It is important to remind ourselves, especially on this day honoring the memory of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., that there can be no social justice without economic justice. There can be no economic justice without a democracy responsive to the people rather than to the privileged and powerful. And there cannot be a democracy responsive to the people unless the scourge of big money in politics is ended. This Wednesday marks the fifth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in “Citizens United vs. FEC,” which opened the floodgates. It must be reversed. My hope is the next president will replace one of the five Republican appointees with someone who will do so. But this isn’t the only route. So far, 16 states have called for a constitutional amendment to get corporate money out of politics. This Wednesday, many will be demonstrating outside state legislatures that have not yet done so. Even if you can’t be there in person, please add your voice.
