It is international education week, and I want to educate all my fellow UC Davis students on particular stereotype about international students on campus. During the protests for the proposed fee hike, Ive been hearing things like international students can afford an increase in tuition, but we cannot, why dont we heavily increase out of state tuition only, the international students dont care about tuition increase, and I want students to be more mindful about saying such comments. As an international student myself, I would like to say that the stereotype that all international students are rich and self sustainable is completely false. I know many international students are sponsored by their government; many international students take loans; many international students are bounded by contracts; many international students parents sacrifice their entire savings so that their children can have a better life... a life they could simply dream of in their youth. My parents personally eat the simplest of food, and live a lower-middle class life-style just so that I can see a better future and stay relevant in a college environment. They want their sacrifice to go towards my happiness and not towards the greed of a few corporate minded folks. No one likes tuition hike! The University is dependent on our population because of the extra out of state tuition we bring in, and we are benefiting from the University as well, but we are not simply guests, we are a part of you all. So please respect all communities on campus regardless of their ability to pay full out of state tuition or in-state tuition! There is much more to us than the money we bring. I am personally against fee hikes, and I dont appreciate the Regents attitude towards the students. This trend to increase tuition will never end... it says 5% for 5 years, but another proposal shall be made again... and none of us will be there to take action. I think students have more power than they think they do. Lastly, I am saying this as an international student. I might be the student assistant to the Chancellor, or a admin, or whatever people want to call me, but this is my voice as a student and everyone shall respect that! If you want to complain against me for stating my opinion: you can email my supervisors at [email protected] #NoFeeHike #IEW
