It is my fervent hope that school districts will begin to educate their entire personnel about treatment of students with concussive brain injury. There is no magic formula outside of reading symptoms and then managing them. Some students with concussion often can make it to school but as the result of a video lesson or louder than usual noise level may need 15 or 20 minutes rest periodically to allow the headache or whatever other symptom that manifests to pass. If they need to go to the nurse, they should not be greeted with you should just go home. It is important that students not push through their symptoms but recognize them and rest through them. In many cases, there is NO reason why a student needs to be absent from school although the staff has to honor the accommodations laid out by the physicians. Often the severity of the symptoms precludes the student from even being able to try to attend school --weve been in both shoes. All concussions are major only the severity of symptoms differ. All reduce mental acuity, increase fatigue, enhance emotionality and anxiety, as well as isolate the sufferer. There is NO standard time for recovery. There should be extraordinary support for them. Impatience and sarcasm have no place in successfully restoring them. Please push for better education for all regarding concussion. While so much has changed, it is alarming that the newest information is only trickling down to those who need to know it now.
