It is not often that I post information on Facebook, but recent events warrant a response from your City Manager. Although I don’t always have time to monitor each comment, I do make an attempt to review the insights and suggestions that are included in the posts from residents about relevant community issues. The festive atmosphere of the holidays and the enjoyment of community improvements were tempered by some tragic situations involving senseless acts of violence and a somber disregard for human life. As difficult as these incidents are for us to experience, our emotions don’t even compare to the family members and loved ones involved in these heartbreaking circumstances. As a community we mourn for their loss and hope they can in some small way feel our support. If you know of anyone who may need additional counseling, please let me know and I can refer them to some resources in the area. Our City has been blessed in the past year and 2015 looks very bright. Without question, there are a lot of things we can do to improve the community, but in many ways they are just details. We are fortunate to be in Imperial Beach where new businesses are opening, alleys are being paved, street lights are being installed, roadway improvements are underway, public safety is responsive and we have positive relationships with the Navy, the Port of San Diego and our neighboring communities. We have the cleanest beach in the County, a world class estuary, an iconic pier, and enjoy both Bayfront and oceanfront vistas. Obviously this could be a very long paragraph, but there is no need for additional cheerleading because you all know the great things about Imperial Beach. It is important that every member of the community step forward to make a difference. If we can replace complaint with action, together we can exceed all expectations of success. There is a variety of viewpoints and opinions in Imperial Beach and people are not afraid to express their thoughts. However, if we can encourage people to become engaged in community building and use our limited resources efficiently, we can keep Imperial Beach great and even make a few fun improvements. Finally, thank you so much for your support and patience. It has been a pleasure getting to know so many of you and I look forward to working with you in the coming months and years to realize the mission statement of the City: “To maintain and enhance Imperial Beach as ‘Classic Southern California’; a beach-oriented community with a safe, small town, family atmosphere rich in natural and cultural resources.” Andy Hall, Imperial Beach City Manager
