It is now almost 3 years living here in this neighborhood. My neighborhood is a Jewish community. It is 97 percent Jewish. Most times, --Saturdays especially—they walk past my house to go to the synagogue which is a straight 10 minute walk from where I live. In jewish tradition as I was told, everything should be natural on saturdays. So instead of driving, they have to walk on Saturdays when going to their temple (synagogue). They walk in groups or family most often: children in front, men with black and white attires in the mid and women with long gowns behind. Most times I stand outside my house and watch them walk past me. I cannot count how many Saturdays I stood outside my house watching them walk up the hills. But I can count how many times I was ever greeted by them; not more than 3. In fact, of all these 3 greetings, I initiated the 2 by first saying “hi” before getting a “hi” in reply. A head node is usually the normal greetings I get after guilty eye contacts, which I think might be part of their culture; that sense of inward prayers you do to your God and wish not to talk to anybody but just node to acknowledge one’s present. So I have no problem at all with the style of greeting. However, I noticed whenever I walk around my neighborhood, kids run to their houses and suspiciously look at me from their windows, women quickly cross to the other side of the road, and men walk faster upon seeing me. They never invite me to their parties and when my host families invite them they never come. They look at me as if I am an alien from space. I never taken any offense to these acts because I believe they grew up that way and it is a set of value they nurtured with. Are Jewish people racist? Well, for the sake of avoiding generalization, I will say some Jewish at my neighborhood are f**king extremely racist. What I import from my almost three years of living in this Jewish community however, to an understanding of normative behaviors and the accommodation of racial differences is this: There is something systematic and dangerous for the world to turn a blinded eye to Israel continues booming of Palestinians claiming self-defense. If the media can at least for a day report fairly and unbiasedly the atrocities been committed to in Gaza by the state of Israel, you will notice it is almost catching up with the genocidal atrocity Hitler committed against Jewish people. I believe we all are accomplishes to Safyuun, a 6 year girl who’s head was blown to dust and her brains licking from her head like peanut butter, or youssuf, also a young boy of 11 who’s body parts came flying from the street where he was playing with his friends. If the world can condemn the Kurdish genocide by Sadam Husain, or wholesale slaughter of Tutsis in Uganda, or Bosnian Genocide, i see no reason why Isreal should be exceptional. I am william sang mendy and i stand with the people of Palestine.
