It is now official...our long pursued dream to have university education domiciled right in our constituency is nearing reality, after two years of engagement with Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST). The talks gathered pace when I attended the 8th MMUST graduation ceremony on 25th July; and yesterday, MMUST Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eng. F.A.O. Otieno visited the BIT grounds on the picturesque Njalagobe Hills, Mundere and personally announced that MMUST will be in Bunyala within 6 months. Prof. Otieno was accompanied by Prof. Shiundu and Prof. Otengi, among others. The ceremony was also graced by Mr. D.K. Maina who runs a World Bank funded project at the Ministry of Devolution, which has accepted our request to fast track construction of 300-bed capacity hostels, a library, and a kitchen/dining. Together with the lecture halls/admin block already funded by the Budalangi CDF and the multi-purpose hall funded by WKFM&CDD, these will be sufficient for the Bunyala Campus to admit the first batch of government-sponsored students next year. MMUST will also invest in further development of infrastructure. We have set up a Technical Team of the key actors to drive the process. Prof. Paul Ogula and Mr. Flavian Odoli (CDF Secretary) will represent us on the Team. Among programs we are targeting are Public Health, Marine Science and Disaster Management. My special appreciation to Prof. Ogula, Prof. Otengi and other sons and daughters of Bunyala who continue to make quiet but effective contribution to the transformation of our land. Murio muno. NB. As I indicated earlier, the new Bunyala Technical Training Institute (BTTI) that was to be hosted at BIT will now be constructed in Bulemia, where CDF is already acquiring 5 acres of land for the purporse. The Lugale BIT center will become part of the new MMUST Bunyala Campus to serve our Southern Zone.
