It is often said that when Republicans oppose conformity and bending the knee, that we have failed to move on and need to get with the times. We are hearing this now in relation to our understandably strong reaction to former comrades new found attitude of respect and acceptance of monarchy. This is nothing new, Republicans have often been accused of being backward thinking, when in fact we are the most progressive force in Irish politics. One young man, arrested for breaking Elizabeth Windsors laws by a force deemed Royal in its name, found guilty by one of her courts that he refused to recognised, and who was imprisoned and died in Her Majestys Prison Maze was also deemed to be full of meaningless rhetoric. He was told to get with Modern Times by the Church, by Constitutional Nationalists that wanted to share power in an internal Six County settlement, by the 26 County Establishment, by the British Government. That young mans name was Bobby Sands, and this poem was his response. We dont need to ponder what he would have said, this is what he DID say. As relevant now as when it was written.
