It is our privilege to begin accepting applicants for The Seventh Annual Avant Award. In the six short years since its founding, the Joseph and Francis Brucia Foundation has played a major role in the lives of its grant recipients, helping them “go forth and seek their artistic passions”. Giuseppe Brucia’s generous financial support helped start the San Francisco Opera in 1919. It was Giuseppe’s desire to bring opera to the people and in memory of the family’s patriarch, Joseph and Francis Brucia, along with the director of the Opera Company David Gockley worked together to create the first live simulcast of the San Francisco Opera in 2006 enjoyed by over 8,000 viewers in the San Francisco Civic Center Plaza for free. Joseph was able to fulfill his fathers goal of bringing opera to the people. Subsequently, Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaimed January 26th Giuseppe Brucia Day in San Francisco. In honor of their families legacy of support and love for the arts, the three Brucia children - Louise, Larry and Francesca, founded the Joseph and Francis Brucia Foundation, a 501(c) (3) charitable organization in 2007. The foundation provides monitory grants, called the Avanti Award, to selected artists in the visual and performing arts each January at its annual award dinner. It is the Joseph and Francis Brucia Foundation’s goal to give recognition and financial support to emerging talent in the San Francisco Bay Area enabling artists to continue to pursue their passion. The Foundation has granted monies to over 20 artists from 2008 to 2013 ranging from $4,000 to $20,000 based on the emerging talent’s passion for their art and financial need. This year we are accepting applicants until November 1, 2013. Recipients will be notified by December 1, 2013.
