It is quite interesting to learn that the teaching of English was once banned in 1986 in Libya by the late dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi . When I asked a Libyan course mate of mine the rational for outlawing the learning of English , she simply replied Well , there is no specific rational behind it . It was a POLITICAL DECISION led by the late dictators hatred towards America , the western world and everything related to them , which includes ENGLISH ! . And she continued When it was introduced back in 1996 and English was made compulsory , we had no proficient ENGLISH TEACHERS to teach in classrooms . He just made a GENERATION suffer from his stupid decision . That is exactly when I realized , we here, are not really ALONE in our struggle .
