It is sad that so many women are so heavily programmed to look - TopicsExpress

It is sad that so many women are so heavily programmed to look immaculate, that it has become their own personal everest to post a #nomakeupselfie without half the contents of a Debenhams make-up concession caked on their faces so thick; that it generates a startlingly similar colour and consistency to one of Mary Berrys Orange Layer Cakes (see link). The idea that posting a photo of yourself without makeup is now considered brave - is a somewhat mortifying characteristic of our culture, especially in this context, where surely the bravado required to take your slap off for a photo woefully pales into insignificance when compared to what you are supposedly drawing attention to. Tomorrow your selfie disappears into yesterdays news feed. Cancer doesnt. Before anyone jumps down my throat, yes - its great that £1million has been raised, however, before we all go reaching for the champagne, hi-fiving and patting each other on the back - lets check the maths on that figure. 800,000 text donations... 63 million people in the UK. This means rounded to the nearest percentage.... 0% of the UK population have donated a penny. Now look at your facebook news feed, and work out if 0% is a representative proportion of the people you know have posted on, or about selfies... Ill bet theres more. What happens once everyone has posted their selfie?! Surely this fad fizzles out - and at this rate the deficit between donations and selfie uploaders will be huge. So if you are in this for the right reasons, rather than self-gratification by proxy you can: text BEAT to 70099 to donate £3 to cancer research UK go here for macmillan: macmillan.org.uk/Donate/ and remember: basking in reflective glory whilst pretending you are making a difference, is worse than standing by and doing nothing at all. /End.
