It is said credit is given where credit is due. Yesterday the president of the Republic John Dramani Mahama paid a visit to Tobinco Pharmaceuticals new state of the art facility. When I first heard the news report, I did not know what to make of it but upon careful reflection I came to the following conclusion, the president has shown true maturity and leadership and should be commended. About a year ago this month there was the whole brouhaha between Tobinco and the FDA, It was clear at the outset that the leadership of Tobinco felt the whole problem was politically engineered and yes they had real reason to feel that way. Some of us took the view that both parties had breached both national and international laid down regulatory protocols and conventions and that rather than play the usual blame game, a root and branch investigation into our national drug regulatory frame work was required. Indeed I in particular was of the view that throwing the baby away with the bath water was not what was needed and made this known to officialdom. Many reasons were adduced for why the government will move tooth and nail to cripple this company, gladly common sense prevailed and Tobinco abided with the findings of the government investigation committee chaired by the ten former deputy minister for health, with Augustine Kokukokor and others as members. The government in my view realising the merits of promoting local pharmaceutical manufacturer and coming alive to the fact that wealth and job creation are whats required and not foot soldier dominated political rhetoric, ensured that a disbursement of the Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF) facility by the Ministry of Trade and Industry to support local manufacturing of Pharmaceuticals was extended to the company. This is the way to go in this nation, credit facilities should not be extended on the basis of political belonging but on the basis of ability, track record and potential for delivery.
