It is said that confession is good for the soul and I have a confession to make. For a number of years I have blamed Charlie Lennox for the downfall of America. You see, I believe that our troubles started when air-conditioning was invented. Before that time, Washington was a fetid swamp and legislators arrived in January and departed in about March or April to escape malaria and the heat and humidity of Washington. They introduced bills that were important to the nation, voted on them and went home. But with the invention of air-conditioning, they were able to stay all year round and being legislators, needed to stay busy making new laws. And now we have the CFRs (Code of Federal Regulations, in so many volumes that no one human could carry them all) and a plethora of alphabet organizations to keep us safe. So, to my confession! I learned today that it was Willis Carrier who invented air-conditioning. My apologies to Charlie Lennox and his heirs for the slander I committed on his good name. And a pox on Willis Carrier for what he has done to our country! ;o)
