It is said that hidden behind the snow capped mountains of central Asia, there lies a mythical Kingdom of incredible beauty (known to the Buddhists as Shambhala). It is described as a utopian paradise, radiating with peace and wisdom. This sacred realm is meant to be so remote and inaccessible, that only the most devout explorers have found it. Shambala is so ancient, that is predates the Buddhist religion by several hundred years (it is mentioned in both Hindu and Bon texts as early as 800 BCE). According to legend, the first King of Shambhala travelled to India to meet with the Buddha and learn of his Kalachakra teachings (the wheel of time). He took these mystical secrets back to his Kingdom, where they were protected from the outside world. Many believe that Shambhala lies on the very edge of physical reality, connecting this world to the next (a gateway between the physical and spiritual realms). Only the most enlightened of souls can enter this paradise, (indeed, Tibetan lamas spend a great deal of their lives in spiritual development before attempting the journey to this mythical realm). Those who claimed residence there were said to be long-lived, possessing deep spiritual insight and an advanced understanding of culture and technology. Some say that it was the collective minds of Shambala that helped guide the evolution of science and humanity. Perhaps deliberately, the guidebooks to Shambhala describe the route in terms so vague that only those already initiated into the teachings of the Kalachakra can understand them.
