It is said that under the floor of this courtyard (top pic) there is a pit that goes straight to hell. It was so frightening that in an entire fortress, Castle Houska, (bottom pic) located in the Czech Republic, was built around it on the 13th century specifically to close it off. It is said that during the castles construction, prisoners who were condemned to death were offered full pardons if they would agree to be lowered by rope down into the pit, and report back what they saw. The first prisoner, after being lowered into the darkness, started screaming and begged to be hoisted out. They said when he came up, his hair was gray and his skin was wrinkled, giving the appearance of having aged 30 years!
