It is season for budding writers- Now, Tendulkar... If Maun maun Singh has decided to write a memoir, could Tendulkar have been far behind? Sachin Tendulkar has attacked former India coach Greg Chappell, describing him as a “ringmaster” who imposed his ideas on players. Chappell made a vain attempt to replace skipper Rahul Dravid with Tendulkar months before the 2007 World Cup in West Indies,he says in his autobiography.Dropping a bombshell, Sachin Tendulkar has disclosed that the then India coach Greg Chappell had made a “shocking” suggestion to him to take over India’s captaincy from Rahul Dravid months before the 2007 World Cup in West Indies.,the master batsman writes in his autobiography “Playing it My Way” due for release on Thursday. Tendulkar is scathing in his criticism of Chappell who was the national coach from 2005 to 2007, describing him as a “ringmaster who imposed his ideas on the players without showing any signs of being concerned about whether they felt comfortable or not”. India’s 2007 World Cup campaign ended in a fiasco.“I dont think I would be far off the mark if I said that most of us felt that the Indian cricket was going nowhere under Chappell”. Chappell was publicly questioning “our committment and instead of asking us to take fresh guard, was making matters worse”, writes Tendulkar in the book co-authored by noted sports journalist and historian Boria Majumdar. The master player says that several senior players were relieved to see Chappell go, “which was hardly surprising because, for reasons hard to comprehend, he had not treated them fairly”. Tendulkar cites the coach’s attitude towards Sourav Ganguly which he describes as “astonishing”. It is really surprising that Sachin has chosen to come out with his version after 7 years. Everyone knew about Saurav Gangulys poor work ethics, and with advancing age, he formed a clique, with Bhajji and Yuvraj hitting out at Chappell, and generally manipulating the flow of criticism against the coach. Sourav also let it be known to Sachin and Laxman that they were next on the coachs hitlist. The old mens club got together, and targeted Chapell, (and Dravid and Irfan Pathan for supporting him). Sachin should have stayed away from penning such a one sided book. We should rather wait for Dravids version, which I doubt will support/endorse Sachins claims. After all, Sachin played with facts in monkeygate scandal to save Bhajji once. How one wishes that Sachin maintains his aura and goodwill, and stay away from unnecessary controversies, after having retired on a high.
