It is sometimes hard to keep up with all the work the 3rd grade is doing! A quick walk through a few 3rd grade classrooms today revealed all the things students are working to learn. In Mrs. Peternells class, students on being story-tellers, not just reporters. They discussed adding dialogue, descriptions and feelings to make their stories more compelling. They conferenced with another classmate to make their stories more interesting. They considered different leads, or interesting ways writers draw readers into a book. The kids found lots of examples of interesting leads in the books in their classroom library. In Mrs. Lantzs class, students were doing research on the computer during their computer lab special. Students were all part of a group working to become experts about a given continent. Today they researched and drew various animals and birds native to their continent. Who knew there were such remarkable creatures all over the world! They worked to set a goal for their research for that day and then to assess whether they had met their daily goal. In a few other classes, students prepared for a math assessment tomorrow by reflecting on their own learning needs as they reviewed the unit. Students who were not totally sure they had mastered a concept on the review sheet conferenced with a teacher to revisit concepts and feel confident in their own knowledge. What an exciting year for these eager learners!
