It is strange to think how that dog of yours can trace their lineage back to the wolves. The way we think dogs were domesticated out of the wolf population is itself fascinating. Still so similar to dogs, yet clearly quite distinct, wolves are a unique and fascinating animal. Their preservation is critical. They are canids who, like foxes, refused to be tamed by us. Their place in the wild fulfills an important role, fills an important niche. Their intelligence and social nature is not in dispute. Yet sadly, their lives are. We fetishize their wildness on one side, fear and disparage them on the other, and they—great hunters by any measure—fall to our predation. Please, stand for wolves. Lend your voice to the fight to restore their place in the world. The cure for misunderstanding is education, the cure for fear is familiarity. To learn about wolves is to understand them, and to understand them is to lose fear—or, worse, indifference—and to gain respect for them instead.
