It is that time of year when groups are seeking donations. Some flat out, some through snacks. The Boy Scouts were at the local Safeway not too long ago, and Ive always been uncomfortable saying no. They are just boys after all. They dont know the organization they are learning from is highly discriminatory towards gays, especially troop leaders, you can be a gay boy scout though. This time though, I was wanting to say No, thank you and explain, but again, the kid isnt going to get it. I was thinking of carrying around little business cards, perhaps a rainbow one in this case. On one side it would say, Im voting with my wallet. On the back it would say something like, I would like to buy your merchandise, but your organizations policy towards LGBT people is unacceptable. I am voting with my wallet by not financially supporting groups like yours. Have a nice day. This got me to thinking that my little cards could be color coded. Pink for those which discriminate towards women via pay reductions or denial of reproductive services in the health care policies. A black or gray one for fossil fuel companies or companies which dump their waste into our environment.
