It is the nature of privilege that it enables in us evil. That I am white means that I am granted benefits of historical inequities and walk every day on the sweat of slaves, the bodies of Black folk. In spite any efforts, I have the blood of Aboriginals on my hands. My pale skin is a badge of those evils. I am colonial in the spaces I occupy. The concept of The White Devil is proven in this and just by my very existence and presence I perpetuate the betrayal of a Judas kiss as old as time. It means I must do all I can in my time here to silence the echo of that violence and to hold my tongue where I should not be heard and to listen to the voices of my ancestral victims. We cannot wash our hands of this or else we forsake the trials and tribulations of the countless peoples and nations and cultures we have bled. Like it or not, we are snakes. We are Devils. Thats what it means to recognize your privilege. I think thats what the lesson was supposed to be.
