It is time for me to hit those books again. For the next 10 months I will be conducting a literature review and writing a thesis on the "nutritional value of fibrous feeds (eg. conserved forages, sugar beet pulp, soybean hulls, non-grain complete feeds) for horses and their ability to meet the nutritional requirements of performance horses". I am hoping that my findings will give trainers the confidence to substitute a portion of the grain load of the diet with a high energy fibre product and still be able to meet the nutrient requirements of these hard working horses, without adversely affecting performance. In turn, this may lead to improving the welfare of performance horses by reducing the incidence of colic, gastric ulcers, laminitis, and some stereotypical behaviours - all of which are associated with high-grain diets. I am very excited to be doing this and if I go a little quiet, it is not because I have disappeared off the scene, but because I am madly researching and typing. :-)
