It is time for our Annual OPERATION DOG(Donating Our Goodness)! 2014, makes our 17th year of doing this!! We hand out everything from dog/cat food, to bottled water, to collars, leashes, packing blankets(great portability), dog boots, bowls, toys, sandwiches, coffee, hot chocolate, timbits plus donuts. We give out hats and mittens/gloves and dog coats and ziplock baggies with kleenex, lip balm and poop bags AND, we also give our notes of positiveness! We will post our 2013 grand totals shortly. :) AND for those that may wonder if a RAOK(random act of kindness) can make a difference, let me share the story of Jason and Shep. I first met them 12 years ago this December. Jason was from a very tragic life story as so many are and had never finished high school. I met him on the streets and he had a young pup named Shep and was struggling. I passed along items for his dog and hot coffee, homemade sandwiches etc. for him. He was filled with gratitude. Every year, our paths would cross at XMAS and five years ago, Shep became ill and Jason was very worried. He gave all that he could to this dog, doing without food for days for himself. He tried finding work, hard as a high school drop-out etc.... So, I took a leap of faith. Jason was never one to complain, point fingers, be bitter and always spoke in terms of fact about his life. He did not feel sorry for himself and he loved his dog, more than anything. So, I paid for Sheps bills out of my pocket and over the time it took for Shep to get better, I would take them both to the Vet. From there, one of the staff also came to know Jason and Shep and offered them a place to stay, rent free. From there, someone offered him a seasonal job and from there he got another job and every pay that he was given, he gave 1/3 to pay for his keep knowing that he was asked not to pay at all; 1/3 for Shep and he took the rest to save up to go to school. He finished his high school and someone gave him another job and he saved and he saved. AND every Xmas Jason and Shep would come out with me and others and give back to the community. Fast forward and Jason is now getting ready to finish University and this was made possible all because of a person who once gave him a sandwich.....and showed him and his dog some heart and believed. Believe or not, one small gesture can change a life and for the better. While we cannot make the world a better place for all, by working together, we can effect positive differences where we can and hope that our RAOKs pay it forward..... Thank you Jason and Shep for making me a better person and changing my life for the better.
