It is very disappointing to see how many pet stores in South Africa are not interested in educating their customers about new feeding guidelines for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. A reputable rabbit breeder got upset and asked us where is the proof that claim dry food mixtures are bad for rabbits. When we emailed them the clinical feeding trials, they responded they not interested if it is not based on food made locally. A reputable chinchilla breeder also told us that his homemade dry food mixture is the best and he does not believe in overseas manufacturers sales talk. I am really shocked at this behaviour. These manufacturers: Burgess, Oxbox, Supreme, Mazuri, Small Pet Select are all leading the way selling food products based on new scientific findings. They are following recommendations laid down by FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation). FEDIAF represents the national pet food industry associations in the EU and from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland and Russia, and is the spokesman for approximately 650 companies across Europe. One of FEDIAF’s main objectives is to maintain the well-being of pets by the provision of safe, well balanced and nutritionally sound pet food through its member companies. FEDIAF strives to ensure high standards for all pet food products manufactured and sold in Europe, through consideration of safety, nutrition and palatability. Last year, the organisation teamed up with the UK-PFMA (Pet Food Manufacturing Association) and a panel of renowned experts, including Professor Anna Meredith , to produce new guidelines for responsible rabbit, guinea pig and chinchilla ownership and feeding. They provide pet food manufacturers with nutritional recommendations to ensure the production of well balanced and nutritionally sound diet. These guidelines are aimed at helping manufacturers to develop and produce balanced rabbit, guinea pig, chinchilla, cat and dog nutrition for a long and healthy life of the animals. All the latest scientific research and findings can be downloaded from their website. fediaf.org/
