It is well known that exercise and resistance exercises are beneficial for osteoarthritis (wear and tear arthritis) suffers...but why? Theories include; Increased muscle contraction improves cartilage quality and structure Weak hip muscles causing abnormal gait (walking) pattern and load joints incorrectly leading to more damage Better balance reactions from a muscle that is trained correctly Stronger muscles are thought to absorb more of the energy that would be transferred through the bones meaning less wear and tear Strength training (even very light) can improve bone health Specific exercises improve fluid in the joint meaning that the cartilage has the nutrients it needs to heal Weight loss; less load though the joints so less damage to the joint surfaces Research has shown that a simple exercise routine can help reduce pain, improve function and restore usual activities for osteoarthritis suffers. However it is vital that the exercises are specific to the problem, meaning a diagnosis and treatment regime should be specific for each person.
