It is with JOY and great EXCITEMENT that we announce our SUMMER GUEST FACULTY for the SUMMER BALLET INTENSIVE. Ja’Malik A former member of Cleveland Ballet, Oakland Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, City Dance Ensemble, Ballet Hispanico and Ballet X. Ja Malik is a freelance choreographer based in Harlem New York. So far having created works for North Carolina Dance Theater 2, Oakland Ballet, and CityDance Ensemble of Washington D.C. for which his work “Broken Prayers” was considered a high point... and was mentioned as a choreographer who shows a fine eye by Pamela Squires of the Washington Post. He has also self produced his own work in Harlem Stages E-Moves 10th anniversary season and The 2009 Reverb Choreographic Project. In 2010 Ja Malik was invited to present his work in Ballet Builders 20th anniversary and final presentation, E-Moves 11, the historic 92nd Street Y Noon Dance Series and The Young Choreographers Showcase where he was named a Choreographer to Watch by Rosalyn Sulcas of The New York Times for his ballet “The Hour Before”. In 2012 Ja’ Malik’s solo “A Love Sonnet”\*Farewell* was chosen as a Division 1 Finalist in the 15th annual Choreography Festival presented by the McCallum Theater of Palm Desert California. Performed to great reviews and audience applause by Principle Dancer Brooklyn Mack of The Washington Ballet. In the Fall of 2013, Ja Malik will premiere a new work on Columbia Ballet Collaborative. Nicole Corea Corea joined the Lubovitch company in 2010. Originally from Palmyra, NY, she began training under Sandy Stramonine and Lynn Kareken until her acceptance to The Juilliard School, where she graduated with a BFA in 2000. There, she worked with choreographers such as Lila York, Mauricio Wainrot, Lar Lubovitch and Robert Battle. Upon graduation, she danced with Ballet Hispanico for two years before touring through Europe with Elisa Monte Dance. In addition, she has danced with Ballet Memphis, where she has also worked as a choreographer, producing six works on the main company, as well as work on the junior company. Her work has also been performed at the Thang Dao Contemporary Dance Festival in NYC. Other dancing credits include the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Nilas Martins Dance, Pier Group, Thomas/Ortiz as well as numerous independent choreographers throughout the East Coast. Corea is very excited to continue her journey with the Lubovitch company. Laura Gurdus Dolid, on the Goucher faculty since 1981, studied at the School of American Ballet for six years where she was trained by Diana Adams, Alexandria Danilova, Muriel Stuart, Felia Doubrovska, Stanley Williams, and Antonia Tumkovsky. Upon graduation, she joined the Pennsylvania Ballet. Following, Ms. Dolid became a member of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and then a soloist with the Israel Ballet. Her teaching career began in Israel and upon returning to the United States she joined the faculty of the Poughkeepsie Ballet Theatre in upstate NY. Afterwards she taught at the Harkness Ballet in NYC. Since coming to Baltimore in 1981, Ms. Dolid has been on the faculties of The Baltimore Ballet, Peabody Institute and Carver Center for Arts and Technology. In 1985, Ms. Dolid began the dance program at the Sudbrook Arts Centre and continues in that capacity today. She expanded the program in 1990 when she co-founded the Baltimore County Youth Ballet and in 1995 when she established BCYBs Summer Dance at the Sudbrook Arts Centre. In addition to being on the faculty at Goucher, she is also on the faculty of Peabody Preparatory. In 2011, Ms. Dolid was awarded a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts to start a boys training program at the Sudbrook Arts Centre. Jayson Douglas began his training at Dance World Academy in Passaic, New Jersey. He furthered his training with Boston Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Alvin Ailey, Steps NYC, and Point Park University all on full scholarships. His professional career has spanned over the last 10 years. He began his professional career as a Trainee with North Carolina Dance Theatre in Charlotte, NC. Jayson has also danced for Ballet Nouveau Colorado, Ballet Memphis, Ballet Quad Cities, Illinois Ballet, Lexington Ballet, Ballet Theater of Maryland, and Company C Contemporary Ballet. Featured roles include Prince in Cinderella, Jester in Swan Lake, and Corp de Ballet in Twyla Tharp Suffer in the Sync. He has also performed around the world on World Class Cruise Lines as a dancer and aerialist in Cirque affiliated themed shows. He is also a received excellence awards and scholarships for his choreography. He is currently freelancing with Florida Dance Theatre and teaching at conventions around the states. Peter Merz choreographed his first ballet at the age of 12. Mr. Merz studied at the San Francisco Ballet School, the Washington Ballet, the Burklyn Ballet School and the University of Cincinnati. He performed with the Dayton Ballet School and the Cincinnati Ballet. Mr. Merz joined the faculty at Point Park University where he is currently a tenured Assistant Professor of Dance and Head of Ballet. He teaches several levels of ballet technique, pointe technique, male technique and dance composition. He has created ballets for numerous companies and this year was named as Best Choreographer at the Youth America Grand Prix. Cynthia K. Ridler was born in Anchorage AL and brought up in Salt Lake City, UT where she studied extensively with the renowned Master Teacher and Choreographer Willam F. Christensen. As a student Ms. Ridler received scholarships to train with Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Aspen Summer Dance School and the Harid Conservatory. After attending the University of Utah on the Christensen Scholarship for Ballet she joined the company of Ballet West and later the Cincinnati Ballet. Throughout her career Ms. Ridler was privileged to perform Ms. Ridler also had the opportunity to perform many of Balanchines great works such as Theme and Variations, Who Cares?, Concerto Barrocco, Symphony in C, Agon, The Four Temperaments, Scotch Symphony and Divertimento #15 and work with such great contemporary choreographers as Paul Taylor, Val Caniparoli, John Neumier, Mauricio Wainrot and Kirk Petersen. Her classical repertoire includes Swan Lake, the Sleeping Beauty, La Bayadere, Giselle, Paquita and Raymonda. Upon retiring, Ms. Ridler began to teach ballet full time while also completing a degree in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. She and her daughter Lucy recently relocated to Pittsburgh from Jackson, MS, where she served as ballet mistress for the Mississippi Metropolitan Ballet, to be with her husband, Peter LeBreton Merz. She is currently on the adjunct faculty at Point Park University. Julia Smith began her formal training with the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet under the direction of Marcia Dale Weary at age seven. Throughout her training, Julia performed a variety of roles in ballets such as Dewdrop in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, soloist in Paquita, Dawn in Coppelia, Ruby in The Sleeping Beauty, and Spring Fairy in Cinderella. Smith began her professional career with the Atlantic City Ballet in 2009-2010 under the direction of Phyllis Papa, a former dancer with American Ballet Theatre. Her final performance was Dewdrop with the Eglevsky Ballet in Laszlo Berdo’s The Nutcracker. Smith started teaching as a substitute at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet while she was training and during her dancing career. Currently, Julia is a senior at Shippensburg University studying for her Bachelor’s Degree in business management.
