It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the death of my dear pal and comrade of the Royal Air Force Andy Wiseman. Andy was unique. A Polish Jew, born in Berlin who witnessed the rise of the Nazis and bore the brunt of their hatred as they burnt his entire family during the Holocaust. A man who, being a Jew, volunteered to fight in Bomber Command knowing the risks. Shot down over France, imprisoned by the Nazis, Andy soon became a key member of the X Committee at Stalag Luft 3 and a pain in their Nazi arses and following the Long March he went on the negotiate the surrender of a Nazi POW Camp with the Russians. Andy was a man of distinction, a matter of letters, a man of opinion, humour and compassion and one of the finest linguists known. A man who loved and served the Royal Air Force until his last; accompanying hundreds back to Stalag Luft 3 with Charles Clarke and myself, he took part in the Long March and tours of Berlin. We have all lost a library of history today and a man and friend that will be remembered by many. Per Ardua Ad Astra Andy, we will all miss and remember you old chum raf.mod.uk/history/VeteranAndrewWiseman.cfm
