It is with great pleasure and excitement that I share with you that we have had an outstanding start to our 2014-2015 school year. Our student population has grown. We have over 3900 students in the district as of our last count. The HS is well over 1100 students. Students and teachers are busy settling in and geared up to have another great academic year. Last year Lumberton ISD met and or exceeded all state assessment requirements which was due in large part to the commitment by our students, teachers and parents. Congratulations to all. Extracurricular activities are in full force: Football, Volleyball, Cross Country and Cheerleading are heavy into their seasons. The football team won its first game in over 2 years. The volleyball team is looking to make a run in the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row. Senior Jordan Welborn is leading the Cross Country team and they are looking for another great year. The Cheerleaders, Raiderettes and Players are busy building up Raider Spirit as they visit the elementary campuses and encourage the students to come to the games. As we all know the Mighty Raider Band is tops in the area and Mr. Boothman and his staff have one of the largest groups Lumberton has ever had to work with and we know they will continue their success. Good luck Mighty Raider Band and to all our extracurricular groups. It is evident that many of our students participate in activities outside the classroom and we are proud of their efforts there and on the field. If you have not had an opportunity to make it to a Friday night football game or even a volleyball game, you are missing out on tremendous support for our students. The stadium is packed and the gym is standing room only. Supporting our students helps support our community in many ways. Hope to see new faces in the future. If you are not familiar with Lumberton ISD, get ready. We are prepared for another exciting year in which our students, young and old, turn out to do some amazing things. Last year all of our students were busy raising awareness and funds for those affected by cancer. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. All campuses are involved in Public Service Announcements and activities throughout the month. October is “Pink Out” and Breast Cancer Awareness. Our student body does a tremendous job raising funds to help fight this disease. Last year Lumberton ISD raised over $22,000 to help in the fight against cancer. In addition, our High School campus holds the record for most units of blood donated in one day. Great job students!!! As you can see, we take pride in making sure students are ready academically, but it is also great to know that faculty and staff are making sure our students can be productive members of society in many other ways. It was shared with me recently by one of my principals: “people don’t care how much we know until they know how much we care.” I can truly say I think the LISD community takes pride in making sure we have well rounded students. As superintendent of a great school district, this makes me very proud to serve in this capacity. Thank you and hope to see you around. John Valastro LISD Superintendent
