It is with great sadness that I have learnt the death of Wilfried Martens, former Prime Minister of Belgium, current President of the European People’s Party, a great European leader and an amazing friend of the young Georgian democracy. In very difficult times, as our independence and our sovereignty were under direct threat, the Georgian nation has in him its most dedicated friend in Europe. His help and support have made such a difference in our recent History that I cannot overstate his role. He will be missed in Georgia, but also in Moldova, in Ukraine and in all the former captive nations that he has accompanied so well on their way towards their dream and their destiny: the integration in the European family of free and democratic nations. Beyond, he will also be missed in the whole continent. His commitment to the European Union and the European project was impressive and contagious. Georgia and Europe have lost one of their most prominent and most genuine friends today. And I have lost a personal friend. My thoughts are going to his family.
