It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our brother, Robert Bob Hahn, on January 13th, two days before his 83rd birthday. Bob was an electric bassist and guitarist and a life member since 2004. He owned AB Music in Huntington Beach. Hell be greatly missed. His music store will be hosting a memorial service next month. The particulars are as follows: AB Music 19171 Magnolia Avenue, Suite #10 Huntington Beach CA 92646 714-962-8911 Sunday, February 8, 2015 at 12:00pm There will be some food and a jam session. If you wish to contribute or help out, please call Craig Latronica at the store. Below is an article that recently appeared in the OC Register by Lauren Williams. It is printed with permission. HUNTINGTON BEACH MUSIC STORE OWNERS GENEROSITY REMEMBERED Friends and colleagues are planning a memorial service for Robert “Bob” Hahn, the owner of a local music store and a fixture in Huntington Beach who died last week. He was 83. Hahn owned AB Music Studios, at 19171 Magnolia St., since 1981, and famously failed to charge customers for small repairs to their instruments. Customers sometimes would have to leave money on the counter because Hahn refused payment, said Andy Morrison, who worked at the store since 1992. “It was just almost like the opposite of someone trying to sell something,” Morrison said. “If you wanted to buy it you could buy it, but he wasn’t trying to be real salesy with you there.” Hahn was generous with employees and customers, giving those who taught lessons a larger cut of the rate for a music lesson, Morrison said. Every Saturday after closing hours, Hahn would open the store to fellow musicians and would hold informal, hours-long jam sessions where musicians of all ages would gather, Morrison said. “We got together every weekend,” said Craig Latronica, who works at the store. “It’s really what he lived for.” Hahn, of Huntington Beach, never married or had children, but found a community with those who worked at his store and would spend holidays with them. Originally from Jefferson City, Mo., Hahn learned to play fiddle at 7, then learned to play guitar at the age of 9. He learned to play several instruments, including banjo, clarinet and upright bass and would try any instrument people brought in the store, Morrison said. At 17 he packed up and moved to California and had little contact with his family in the Midwest, said Greg Krupa, who worked with Hahn. “He’s always been by himself, all his life,” Krupa said. Despite having an extended family in the music community, friends described Hahn as quiet and introspective – a man who could be found reading philosophy books behind the counter when he wasn’t playing an instrument. “He was very knowledgeable about a lot of things,” Morrison said. “He just sat back there reading books on philosophy, Buddhism, so there would be a lot of conversations in the store about that.” Terry Dunn said his daughters took music lessons at AB Music Studios years ago, and he was struck by Hahn’s talent for tuning an instrument. “He’s just one of those sweetheart guys. Everyone loved him,” Dunn said. “He was like the Michelangelo of dialing in a guitar.” Hahn died of a heart condition Jan. 13 at Huntington Beach Hospital. A memorial service will be held at the store in February, although the exact date and time have not been arranged.
