It is with great sadness that we report that Dean Emeritus Jim Weigand passed away on June 17, 2013. Mini U has lost a dear and loyal friend. James ‘Jim’ Weigand, 85 FEB. 17, 1928 — JUNE 17, 2013 James “Jim” Weigand died on June 17, 2013, at the Meadowood Retirement Community in Bloomington Indiana. He was 85 years old. Born in Rock Island, Illinois, on February 17, 1928, he was the son of Frank E. and Emma R. Weigand. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Rachel and Theresa, three brothers, Frank, Harry and Raymond, and his beloved wife of 59 years, Natalie (Tally) Weigand. He is survived by his three children, John (Anna) Weigand, Kathryn (Dale) Crafton, and David (Anna) Weigand. Additional survivors include ten grandchildren, Kevin Weigand, Claire Weigand, Andrea Stalcup Wallace, Sarah Stalcup, Stephanie Stalcup, Trevor Crafton, Van Crafton, Chrisdale Crafton, Grace Weigand and Elliott Weigand, and one great-grandchild, J Nash Crafton. Jim graduated from Rock Island High School in Rock Island, IL. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy, where he served as a radio operator. He attended Augustana College in Rock Island and upon graduation went into the field of education. Jim taught Physics and Mathematics in Mt. Carroll High School (IL). He then attended Northern Illinois University and obtained a master’s degree in Educational Administration. During this time, he taught at Littlejohn Elementary School. In 1959, Jim became a consultant for the Title III program of the National Defense Act. In 1962, he attended Indiana University, completing his doctoral program in 1964. Jim stayed on at IU as a professor in the School of Education. Throughout the years, he served as a professor, as an Assistant of President John Ryan (1971-1979), and as Dean of Continuing Studies (1979-1994). After retirement, Jim served as an unpaid Assistant to the President of the Indiana University Foundation until 2012. Jim received two national awards, the Distinguished Achievement Award from the National Science Teachers and the Distinguished Award from the National Continuing Education Association. In Indiana, Jim received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Evan Bayh and recognition from the Indiana General Assembly for his service to the State of Indiana. Additionally Jim received various outstanding teaching awards from Indiana University. In 2006, Jim was recognized with a Distinguished Alumni Service Award (DASA), the highest award given by Indiana University. In 2012, Jim received the School of Education DASA award. Jim took great pride in the creation of Indiana University programs in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Africa, Malaysia, and Thailand. He taught many classes and he always challenged students to follow the motto, “not only do we teach, but we must also inspire.” One of his true joys was teaching the Mini University every June. The Mini turned 42 this year and Jim taught in 41 of the 42 years! Throughout his life, Jim focused on doing for others; he left his positive fingerprints on everyone who met him. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at First United Church in Bloomington, IN, on June 23, 2013, at 2 p.m. Jim will be buried alongside Tally in the Ash Garden at First United Church. A reception will immediately follow the service at Meadowood Retirement Community. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the James E. Weigand Endowed Scholarship in the Indiana University Foundation, to the IU Health Bloomington Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of your choice.
