It is with heavy hearts that we remember those lost and injured in last year’s horrific accident in Barrhaven involving an OC Transpo Bus and a VIA Rail train. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families and friends of the victims, and those injured in this terrible tragedy. As local representatives in Ottawa’s west-end, we know that the feelings and emotions from this incident remain raw. We can’t help but experience these feelings every time we drive past the crossing. To allay the fears of our neighbours, we have been steadfast in our determination to ensure all local rail crossings function the way they should. There is no more important issue for an elected official than the safety and security of Canadians. This past year has again proven what we already knew about the people of Ottawa. We are resilient in the face of adversity, and comforting in the face of tragedy. We believe in our sense of community, and we embrace our neighbours when they need us most. It is these characteristics that we will remember as we mourn the loss of our own this past year, and it is these traits that will guide us forward in the years ahead.
