It isnt that hard, and the Appleton Post Crescent gets it: Independent -- often for-profit and unaccountable charter schools -- are an assault on the Wisconsin way, the life and the values we hold dear. Our public schools are the heart of every community in the state. When the Legislature isnt trying to tear them down, they work toward the day when all children have the freedoms provided by a world-class education. Wisconsin already has over 200 charter schools run by public school districts and they are effective, innovative, and successful. Why in the world would folks elected to, supposedly, represent the citizens of those communities want to pass bad bills that would help rip those communities apart. It makes no sense. Speaking of a hearing on Assembly Bill 549, a really bad bill that does really bad things to Wisconsins public schools, the Post Crescent editorial board concluded that little by little, public education is being chipped away by big-money private interests and the legislators they support. This bill needs to be rejected by legislators who truly support public money for public education. We couldnt agree more and think it is time legislators in Wisconsin start doing was is right for the children, public schools, and citizens of their communities.
