It isn’t often these days that someone finds a way to bring everyone together from across the political spectrum. So hats off to Sen. Lindsey Graham. He suggested that the US should consider boycotting the 2014 Winter Olympics if Russia doesn’t hand over NSA leaker Edward Snowden. And that suggestion accomplished the impossible: it brought everyone from the left to the right, even the Obama White House and Speaker John Boehner, together in unanimous agreement that it’s a terrible idea. Boehner said Graham’s been his friend for 20 years and he loves him, but he’s dead wrong. He said why should we crush the dreams of athletes who’ve trained their whole life for a shot at the Olympics, all over one traitor? Olympic boycotts seldom accomplish anything other than punishing the athletes and the fans. Most people agree that Jimmy Carter’s boycott of the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a huge mistake. Russia stayed in Afghanistan for another 10 years anyway. Meanwhile, Olympic viewers had to watch the big basketball showdown, where Yugoslavia beat Italy for the gold. Never again, my friends. Never again…
