It makes me absolutely sick that no indictment has been made following the death of Eric Garner. Its also a travesty that this story is barely being reported in the news. If you arent aware of this story: Police arrested Eric Garner earlier this year, for selling untaxed cigarettes, an offence which is classed as a misdemeanour in America, not a felony. While placing Garner into custody police officers restrained Garner, despite the fact that he was not using aggression, and not threatening the officers. One of the officers placed Garner in a chokehold, a method of restraint which has been ILLEGAL in the United States for some time now because of its potential to kill. Despite Garner repeatedly pleading with the officers that he couldnt breathe, they continued to restrain and choke him until he died of a cardiac arrest. And yet: although Garner was not acting aggressively, although Garner was not resisting arrest, although Garner was restrained using an illegal technique, although he began to beg for his life, although the coroner who carried out his post-mortem declared his death a homicide, and although the entire scene was captured in this shocking video; none of the officers involved have suffered any form of reprimand, let alone prison. Tonight New Yorks police chief gave a speech after the ruling, saying black lives matter to the police. How many more outrageous miscarriages of justice is it going to take for the people with the power to enact change to stop believing that? #JusticeforEricGarner
