It may be dangerous and disastrous to introduce caste based - TopicsExpress

It may be dangerous and disastrous to introduce caste based affirmative action among a mass of dehistoricized students without giving them an iota of realization why such affirmative action is there at all. It is sad that the idea of affirmative action does not have any impact on students community at large unless they are trained by elite institutions like JNU or CSSSC. Most of the students like people at large in India view caste reservation and other facilities with a feeling of antagonism which does nothing but promote and propagate caste hatred. It is absolutely necessary on the part of governance to introduce elements in our education system that shall make students aware about caste discrimination in India at large. Without doing that dismissing unreserved students antagonism towards affirmative action as simply upper caste arrogance would be hollow and puerile. Sadly in India all notions of ethical moves to reduce social discrimination are disseminated among a privileged section of society. My point is along with introduction of affirmative action and positive discrimination in favor of the marginal castes it is necessary to make people aware of why such policies are necessary. The garb of modernity and consumerist capitalism has created a deep amnesia about past assuming an apparent liberal equality among people. To counter that we need to put forward the history of various discrimination and their after-lives - discrimination based on caste, class, race, gender and religion. Does any of our school, college or university texts books have any representation to talk about the historical and political background of social inequalities and how they still persist in India? If not then how can we expect that any percentage of population, except few who managed to receive proper humanist education in privileged institutions and have also absorbed it, can be sensitive towards social inequalities?
