It may not seem like something that you need to be aware of… but it is. Your plumbing system may be a bit complex if you do not know what you are looking at but take some time to figure out a few key things. Number one; know where your main shut off valve to the house is located. If you should encounter a leak it is important for you to know how to stop the potentially destructive water from doing damage. Next you should find shut off valves that could isolate certain fixtures. At a minimum know where your main shut off valve is but if you look a little closer you will find valves under each fixture most of the time. By finding these valves you can isolate the area that failed and still have running water in other parts of the home. It is also important that you know these valves will work. You can test them yourself or exercise them regularly but if you encounter any valves that seem to be stuck it is a good idea to have them replaced. Whatever you do, do not try to force the valves on or off it is a sure way to break them and create a potential problem or leak.
