It may seem like Im having a lot of fun in the recent shots I uploaded from the last show; I am, but Id have just as much fun singing Sinatra or Bennett style Jazz with a small band backing me. Actually, Id rather do that than do this band! Id love to sing the classics, you know those jazz/blues songs everyone knows. Im talking early stuff like McRae, Torme, Robert Johnson, Muddy waters, Bennett, Sinatra.. Dont get me wrong, what Im doing with the cover band is cool but the backing band is not that great. I walked in yesterday and another band was playing Holy Diver and I was like, man, they are killing it!. The guitar player is so good, hes right in that pocket, nice California crunch. Drummer was awesome. And then I went to my band and it was like oh wow do we really suck this bad? Granted I cant do justice to DIO material, Ill be the first to admit that. No one can really but I cant help wonder how different this would be if my backing band was awesome like that band I saw play at rehearsal. And you gotta understand anything under the remote umbrella of rock, whether it be metal or hard rock requires a constant powerful singer! And it takes an incredible amount of energy to maintain that constant power and higher key for an hour and put on a show and be a front man. And a lot of times it is always the situation where you cant hear yourself or you are competing with the drummer and guitar player for volume. As I have said many times, playing live may not even be needed. In DIO songs, E4 to D4 (based on guitar notes) is the working range and DIOs playground! All the singing notes in these songs are in that range! That is, you have to sing the whole song in that range! Not just hit a B4 and go back down! I almost think that all other genres other than rock have it really easy! Because most of the times men dont sing that high, it is at a very comfortable range with maybe B4 being the highest for a second or two. It is not aggressive singing, you just relax and sing and the backing band is not that loud and more people enjoy that music and youll probably get appreciated more! Whats not to love? To bring it all to a close! DIO started out singing songs like left my heart in S.F, Love potion number 9, Great balls of fire, Beatles songs. And he did that for many years before he went all out into hard rock and metal. Thats sort of where Im now, where DIO started.
